Teddy Bear Picnic-2003!
We enjoyed taking our teddy bear's on a picnic to conclude our Bear Unit. We studied about fiction and nonfiction bears for two weeks. Here are pictures of the Teddy Bear Picnic.

Bear Projects

The McLaughlin class made this bear mural!

Here is our mural.
Flip up the
flap to see what the bear saw.
"A cub" and "some berries"
"The
bear saw....." lift up the hidden flap to reveal....

"A cub." I scotch tape a flap on to the 9x12 piece of construction paper in the bottom right corner. I teach the children how to camouflage the flap to be part of the scenery.
For math during this theme we:
1. measure our teddy bears using five different manipulatives and record the results onto a copied paper that has a bear outline and sentences stating:
My bear is __________ keys long.
My bear is __________ pompoms long. You get the idea. Use whatever manipulatives you have.
2. graph our bears in various ways.
3. use a photocopied paw print to measure the height of items in our room such as the cubbies, table, door and chair. This is also recorded on a homemade sheet. We usually do this activity in partners.
For art we have many activities but here are a few:
1. Using various shades of brown, teach a directed art painting of a teddy bear standing on two legs. We use simple shapes. It is always fun to see the different outcomes from the same directions.
2. After reading Corduroy we finger paint an 9x11 paper and run our fingers vertically at the end to make lines in the paint. The next day we trace an overall pattern onto the back of the finger painting and cut out. We glue this to a bear we have cut out from a pattern on brown construction or one we have painted. We then add two real buttons to the top of the overalls. Viola!
