2024 National Junior Honor Society inductees

ABSECON — The Emma C. Attales Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society welcomed 27 new members during an induction ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 20 in the school cafeteria.

“You have the gifts, the talents, the blessing; go ahead, make good decisions, do the right things, and make something of yourself,” Absecon Superintendent Dr. Daniel J. Dooley told the students. “Thank you for representing our school district so well and we look forward to the amazing things you will accomplish in the future.”

Approximately 150 parents, family members and friends attended Wednesday’s ceremony to congratulate the new inductees. The ceremony also included remarks from City Councilwoman Christine Parker and Board of Education member Linda Wallace.

The students, all 7th and 8th Graders at the Emma C. Attales Middle School here, were selected after completing a rigorous application, which includes the ability to demonstrate the five pillars of the National Junior Honor Society: scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship.

During the ceremony, each member took a pledge to uphold these pillars before receiving their certificate and a stole, signing their name into the Emma C. Attales Chapter registry book.

“We hope this will serve to remind you of the standards of excellence you are charged with maintaining as members of the nation’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious student recognition program,” NJHS Chapter President Rose Marczyk told the new inductees during the ceremony. “In addition to the strong academic records, which established the eligibility for membership, our chapter members are leaders in many student organizations and will make a positive contribution to our Attales Family, and our community through many upcoming projects and service-learning activities.”

Attales’ NJHS chapter was founded in 2019 by Principal Mr. Kevin Burns with the support of Superintendent Dr. Dooley and NJHS adviser Mrs. Sherrie Liepe. Students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 93 to be eligible. Since it was founded, more than 100 Attales students have been inducted into the school chapter.

Once inducted into the NJHS, students participate in a variety of community service activities throughout the year such as maintaining and caring for Veterans Park, participating in the citywide cleanup, hosting food drives to support our local families, volunteering at school and community events. They must complete 20 hours of community service a year.
