STARS pollinator garden

Last week, students in our afternoon STARS program planted flowers and other plants that will attract pollinators such as butterflies and bees in a newly created garden behind the Marsh school.

Absecon Public Schools was recently selected by the New Jersey Audubon Society as a site for the Atlantic County Urban Pollinator Habitat Project, which provided funding and personnel to oversee the installation.

As part of the project, NJ Audubon will have staff members meet with our STARS students weekly to provide a hands-on, nature-based lesson.

The purpose of the Pollinator Habitat Project is to engage Atlantic County youth in environmental education opportunities while simultaneously creating urban areas that benefit wildlife, especially the Monarch butterfly, which has seen dramatic population declines over the last 20 years.

Plants installed in the garden include milkweed, blue mistflower, bergamot, purple coneflower and blue aster, among others.

Our grounds and custodial staff did the tremendous work to prepare the site for the garden, and our STARS staff have gone above and beyond getting this project off the ground!

We would like to send a huge ‘thank you’ to the NJ Audubon Society for selecting Absecon for this noteworthy project.
