The students in Mrs. Hodgens’ and Mrs. Caputo’s Special Education classes at Attales Middle School recently traveled to the Humane Society of Atlantic County to deliver newspapers and handmade blankets for the animals.
When the students arrived, volunteer Maureen Frank gave them a tour of the facility, including meeting some of the animals who were staying temporarily and others – like the birds and giant tortoise – who are full time residents.
Frank explained to the students about the services provided by the Humane Society like pet adoption and veterinary services.
According to Mrs. Caputo, this field trip was a Service Learning Project for the students, but making the blankets also served as a way to work on students’ fine motor skills, teamwork and ability to follow directions. The students were also interested in learning about the different types of jobs available at an organization like the Humane Society.
