Tanger Check Presentation

Two Absecon teachers have a plan to take an underused outdoor area and transform it into a sanctuary for social and emotional learning thanks to a nearly $3,000 grant from Tanger Outlets The Walk in Atlantic City.

Representatives from Tanger Outlets The Walk in Atlantic City visited the H. A. Marsh Elementary School Wednesday, Sept. 14 to present Absecon Public Schools with a TangerKids Grant giant check for $2,944.

The funds will be used to create a Zen-sory Garden in the Marsh courtyard. Special education teacher Jessica Fey and District Literacy Coach Barbara Horner developed the idea for the garden, and were selected this summer as winners of a TangerKids Grant worth nearly $2,500. The pair’s application was subsequently selected to participate in the TangerKids Members Choice Awards, which earned them another $500.

Fey and Horner were joined by Superintendent Dr. Dan Dooley, Marsh Principal Leslie Satt and other school officials, as well as some of Fey’s students for the check presentation.

During their visit, Tanger Outlets The Walk representatives General Manager Linda Berger, Marketing Director Rachel L. Hentschel, Operations Director Barry Ballurio, and Office Manager Tamera Poprik toured the courtyard area where the Zensory Garden will be built.

The Zen-sory Garden will be a space where students and staff can feel welcome and safe, to decompress when needed, and regroup. It will also serve as an outdoor extension of the school’s library and reading area.

Launched in 1996 with the mission of providing funding for schools in the community, TangerKids Grants support the education and future of local youth through a series of programs designed to satisfy the needs of neighborhood schools. Since then, more than $3.1 million in grants and scholarships have been awarded.
