Thanks to the support of our recent special grant award, Absecon Public Schools is officially embarking on an innovative journey to enhance student wellness through the creation of our very own Therapy Animal Farm. This initiative isn’t just about bringing a slice of the countryside to our campus; it’s about shifting our school environment to promote the benefits of the animal-human bond for our most vulnerable students.
Our journey began in late 2025 with the meticulous planning of a safe, sustainable habitat. In collaboration with local experts at Absecon Veterinary Hospital and Straight Shot Farm, we have designed a secure enclosure featuring a double-fencing system and shelter.
A critical component of this project—funded specifically by our grant—is the installation of non-electric watering posts. These stations ensure our two goats and two sheep have access to clean, temperate water year-round without the risk of freezing in winter or overheating in summer. By eliminating standing water, we are proactively maintaining a hygienic environment free from algae and pests, ensuring our animals stay healthy.
Starting in spring 2026, these soon-to-be certified therapy animals will become a core part of the Absecon therapy animal program.
But what does that mean for our students?
- Improved Emotional Regulation: Interaction with our animals is scientifically proven to reduce anxiety and help students return to a calm state more quickly.
- Social Growth: Caring for and engaging with the farm fosters empathy, cooperation, and communication skills. It also promotes within students a sense of responsibility.
- Boosted Attendance: We are integrating farm visits into our attendance incentive programs, giving students a unique, joyful reason to walk through our doors every morning.
Supported by our dedicated staff, the facilities team, and strong partnerships with Merck Pharmaceuticals and local agricultural experts, this farm is built to last.
